Renault Kangoo 4x4 test
Intro: MADE FOR ADVENTUREThe all-purpose Renault Kangoo has become even more flexible with the addition of 4x4 version. Rather than transforming this leisure vehicle into a king of the off-road, the Renault engineers have developed a vehicle that is simply capable of driving off the beaten track. The vehicle also offers Renault the opportunity to underscore its position as an innovator in the "ludospace" segment, which is dominated by French constructors with the Citroën Berlingo and the Peugeot Partner.
Esthetique: ADVENTURE-BOUNDThe Kangoo 4x4 features shields for extra protection under off-road conditions. The rocker panels are wider and the engine housing is protected by a clear metal shield. The fragility of the materials used indicates that looks took priority over strength. The Kangoo spirit prevails, with a huge 2 500 litres of loading space, countless storage possibilities and two sliding doors for easy loading. New front seats with side reinforcements make for greater comfort on windy roads, and the white back dials on the dashboard are new too. Motorization: SOME MINOR ADJUSTMENTSThe Kangoo 4x4 uses the 95 hp 1.6 litre petrol engine featured in the two-wheel drive version. At the end of the year, the 1.9 litre Common Rail dCi turbo diesel will feature. The latest generation powerplant comfortably handles the extra weight of the four-wheel drive, whilst remaining economical. Fuel consumption remains below 8.6 litres per 100 km under mixed driving conditions. The Kangoo 4x4 remains a front wheel-drive vehicle at heart, since when travelling on roads, only the front wheels are driven by the engine. If the front wheels start to spin, then drive is transmitted to the rear wheels too. This system is entirely automatic and uses a hydraulic coupler developed by Nissan. On the road: OLD FAITHFULWhen the Kangoo first appeared in October 1997, its high centre of gravity aroused suspicions that it would handle like a van. But these fears were unfounded. On the contrary, the car is stable in corners and handles well. The two extra driving wheels have not changed anything, and the 4x4 version even features some new driving aids. The ABS is now coupled to an EBV (electronic braking variation) and traction control comes as standard. Suspension with increased travel and the underslung rear axle offer a good comfort/road holding compromise. And the engine is lively too. With a price tag under 16 800 euros, the Kangoo 4x4 should strengthen this model's leading position, in both the family saloon and multi-purpose versions.
