Infiniti G37 Coupé Nearly a year to the day we told you about Infiniti’s plans to make its way to Europe. But what or who is Infiniti? It is Nissan’s luxury brand.
It is what Lexus is to Toyota or Acura to Honda. Sold exclusively in North America until just recently, Infiniti is celebrating its 20th anniversary and averages 150 000 cars sold per year.
Among the already existing models, we have chosen to test the G37 Coupé, which is no doubt the top of this line. Down the road we will also test the FX 5O SUV.
This G37 is a 2+2 Coupé that is looking to challenge the BMW Series 3 Coupé and Audi A5.
The G37 is powered by a 320 brake horsepower 3.7-litre V6, the same that can be found in the Nissan 370Z. This engine works in tandem with a seven speed automatic transmission with very Ferrari like wheel paddles…but that’s where any comparisons end. We will delve further into this but know that we are not at all fans of this gearbox.
The interior is the same as a Nissan, which is a real shame. As a luxury brand, Infiniti should have made a real effort to stand out…like Toyota’s Lexus range does for example. While the finish quality is good enough as are the ergonomics…they are not up to what should be the standards of the G37.
One of the qualities of this Infiniti is the relative silence aboard. You can let the automatic transmission do the work and relax in the comfortable leather seats. The G37 Coupé is a fine car to drive but once you decide to put your foot down it comes up a bit short. The suspension is too soft, the gearbox doesn’t hold up its end and you can feel pain surging through the vertebrae with each dose of violent torque and you can feel just how heavy the car is. Fortunately, the G37 can brag of having a certain amount of agility, thanks in large part to the four-wheel steering and the pleasant sounds of the V6. It is a shame the transmission falls so short of the V6’s capabilities that peak out at 7500 rpm.
The Infiniti G37 can rely on an excellent price / performance and equipment ratio. Its originality is another of its strong and weak points. In any case it shouldn’t pose too much concern to either BMW or Audi.
