BMW série 5 GT
The automobile world is constantly evolving. Today’s luxury family cars must be elegant, comfortable and practical while maintaining a positive image.
Over sized SUV s are no longer in fashion and don’t offer a different style of vehicle for each use.
This is why BMW built the Gran Turismo 5 series.
This extra-large sedan with its long wheelbase and lines akin to a five-door coupe isn’t dissimilar to the Mercedes CLS or Audi’s A5 Sportback. It has the frameless window that until recently were only reserved for coupes.
Yet there is something different about the 5 Series GT. Its massive presence perhaps lacks just a little finesse, especially at the back, but its distinct style is a reminder of the X6, offering more interior space.
And you will notice that space was a priority in the design of the BMW 5 Series GT. The finish quality is exemplary; there is a smooth blend of leather, wood and metal, adding to the impression of more room.
The boot opening is another practical point. Like with the Skoda Superb, it can either be opened at the trunk or hatchback. Storage space ranges from 590 to 1700 cubic litres when the seats are folded down.
Despite weighing in at 2000 kilograms, the 5 Series 530d has plenty of punch and more importantly is very precise. Comfort is never an issue even when in full sport mode and there’s never any exaggerating chassis roll.
Our test model is powered by a 245 brake horsepower six-cylinder diesel engine and definitely holds up its end of the bargain. It is coupled nicely to a precise Steptronic 8 speed automatic gearbox.
The 5 Series GT is an effective and safe car. It has speed without being a full blown sports car. Everyone from the driver to the rear passengers feels right at home and all wouldn’t be put out by a long road trip in this latest BMW.
The Gran Turismo nomenclature is right on the money, this car is spacious and comfortable and can get up and go when needed in total safety;
Safety is a major concern. While you can disconnect all the driving aids, there are still safety devices such as a traffic lane detector, night and reverse camera as well as a blind sport warning system all there for your protection.
The extra large GPS is both precise and simple to use. By pushing a button, all pertinent information is displayed on the windscreen, allowing you to keep your eyes focused on the road ahead.
The 5 Series GT is a compromise between a family sedan with coupe styling cues and SUV like size and practicality. While it is these cars in one and could well be a pre-figure of a new type of vehicle…if you’re thinking about getting your hands one it will set you back between 65 and 90,000 Euros.
