The legend continues
Sometimes, traffic jams are unavoidable… Some opt to sit them out… While for others, a bike might seem like the best idea… Some might walk, but for others, it’s not an option… The new TMAX 500 from Yamaha provides an alternative…
Known as a reference in the world of maxi scooters, the new TMAX retains the base that has made it so famous – its sporty 500cc engine. The redesigned aluminium frame is 5kg lighter than the previous version, providing an increased power to weight ratio. In an urban environment, the TMAX is agile, even with a full tank of fuel. It handles well and it sticks to the road, so much so that it is very hard to find fault. In terms of the brakes, the new ABS system is excellent. The double 267mm discs at the front provide stunning performance, stopping the bike quickly and creating a feeling of safety.
The latest version of the TMAX comes with 15 inch wheels in place of the 14 inch ones previously, while the new fork is 43mm in length vs 41mm previously. The excellent riding position is another reason that the TMAX is the pacesetter in its class.
Take the TMAX into an urban environment, and it feels right at home. Obviously, it’s good for diving in and out of the traffic; it’s extremely stable and the engine is highly responsive thanks to the new injection system. The TMAX is adaptable and can turn its hand to any situation.
The 2008 version of the TMAX features redesigned lines, giving it a sportier look, and more aggressive with its re-worked lights at both front and rear, as well as thinner mirrors. Yamaha have a keen eye for detail, with notably the aluminium adding to the classy look of the TMAX. It creates an elegance and a finesse that hides the large 500cc engine.
The new scooter gets a new fork and a wheelbase that’s 5mm longer. The front 4-piston calliper comes as part of a braking system that has ABS as an option.
silencer has also been modified, as has the fuel tank, which is now 15 litres in size, giving an increased range. The dash has been carefully redesigned, with three chrome-bordered dials complimenting the existing digital rev counter.
On a practical note, the handbrake is useful, particularly when parking the TMAX at the side of the road. The seat features an unusual design, opening at the front. There is plenty of space inside. There are also a further two storage spaces at the front. They’re deep but not lockable.
The TMAX offers a good mix of sportiness, functionality and comfort, making for a machine that works both in town and in wide open spaces. The price is some 8999 euros, with the ABS system costing a further 400 euros.
It’s an investment worth making however, as the TMAX certainly does not disappoint. This is still the one to beat when it comes to maxi scooters.
