BIKEDUCATIDUCATI 600 MOSTRO DARK

Ducati 600 Mostro Dark test

Intro: SMALL AND STOCKY

Ducati 600 Mostro DarkThe Ducati Mostro has been a run-away success for seven years now. The Italian manufacturer's first 900 machine rolled of the production lines in 1992. Two years later, the 600 was launched. This year, the Mostro 600 has undergone a few changes such as an engine instrument panel borrowed from the 900, a plastic fuel tank and muffler skid plates. Reason enough to try out this dark beast, a familiar addition to the Ducati range. (Jessica Paupinat)

Esthetique: GREAT LOOKS

The bike's curves, particularly the shape of the fuel tank, give the Mostro an aggressive look and have given it a reputation for being a "hell of a machine" ! The "Dark" black matt paintwork brings out the lines designed by Michel Galuzzi. The new 600 has also borrowed a rev counter from its older brother. The controls are well finished and fairly comprehensive. The ignition key goes underneath the seat. A minor criticism would be the lack of storage space. The hinged fuel tank gives complete access to the bike's innards.

Motorization: REAL PERSONALITY!

Ducati 600 Mostro DarkThe Ducati Mostro 600 comes with a 583cc V-twin. This engine has been taken from the 1980 Pantah, a bike that first unveiled hydraulic clutch control. With 51bhp under its belt, the Mostro is no speed demon but its engine shows real temperament. Up to 3000rpm, the lack of suppleness means a bit of clutch work is needed. Above this mark though, the bike delivers a quick and effective turn of speed. This Ducati Twin's charm lies in its submission and volition. The sound of the exhausts lacks a little spirit though... such standards we have!

On the road: LIKE A BIG BOY

Given the wide turning radius, riding the bike in the city is a job for big boys (and girls). Weighing in at only 174kg, the bike still knows how to weave. On winding roads, the sturdiness and precision of the little Ducati makes it feel like you're riding one of its bigger brothers. The Mostro is also fitted with an incredibly effective engine brake. The wheel brakes, with a 320mm disc on the front and a 245mm disc on the back are also effective, if not always comfortable. The single rear shock absorber quickly shows its limits, particularly under heavy compression.
