Intro: TIGRESS
The Buell X1 Lightning is one of a kind. An inspirational roadster with a Harley engine and a true crossbreed design. Its impressive unit sits tightly in its casing giving the bike an uneven and agressive allure. Irregular lines and elegant detail add to the X1's split personality. Forget about conventional ideas if you want to appreciate this bike. Possessive and exclusive, the Buell is above all a passionate animal.
Esthetique: ECCENTRIC AND UNBALANCED
Taking great care of the look of this machine, the Buell engineers have incorporated some original ideas. You'll find the shock absorbers under the engine together with the exhaust and the silencer contrasting with the sculptured exhaust outlet. Various elements lengthenthe profile of the X1, whose bulk tapers towards the back. Nothing special on the instrument panel however, which features an analogical rev counter, a speedometer with a small LCD screen that shows the mileage.
Motorization: MORE OF A KITTEN
Just to be different, the 1203cc twin cylinder V is not the latest generation, yet has a distinct head-turning roar. Despite being tamer than the Harley version, it still delivers 101bhp for 11 mkg of torque. Relatively feeble for this type of engine, but still offering a sensational ride. With an electronic injection system and an exhaust sensor, the X1's consumption is impressively conservative at 5 l/100. The meatiest part of the rev range is just above 5000rpm. Aabove that it starts to struggle and the slow gearbox pushes you to shift up
On the road: LOOKS CAN BE DECEPTIVE
If you're expecting the Buell X1 to be a ready-to-please tarmac-devouring animal, you'll be sadly disappointed. This animal prefers to take its time. The engine vibrations stop above 3500rpm but if you make a sudden move, the X1 will quickly pull you back in line. Although efficient, the front end tends to be slightly clumsy and when at high speeds, you'll want to take care when she's tottering round the corners. When this happens, the back sends the load to the front end which plays havoc with driver control. This is where the over-sized, powerful brakes step in to tone down the speed. The lightning is an irreproachably passionate animal with control over its driver, go on give in...
