Intro: APRILIA PEGASO STRADA 650
Once a bike starts to show its age, a manufacturer really has two options. 1, give it a facelift and try to hide the signs of aging, 2, remodel it completely. It is this second option that Aprilia has selected for its Pegaso model.
Esthetique: Between trial and super-moto
Since Leonardo Da Vinci, we know that the Italians have a bit of an artistic flair. The design of the new Pegaso is no exception to the rule. It is trying to reinvent itself somewhere between a trails bike and a supermoto machine. It's allure is complemented by a racing colour scheme, with aluminium, red, and black. A distinct resemblance to the RSV 1000, Aprilia ultra sports bike.
In terms of its finish, the Pegaso is not bad at all.
Carbon effect plastic.
Spoked wheels, and two large aluminium exhausts.
Motorization: A modest mono-cylinder
Up until now, the Pegaso has been powered by the single cylinder Rotax 650. But there is a change of allegiance at Aprilia, with a Yamaha kitting out the new version. It is the XT 660. And it comes with all the characteristics of a Japanese bike. Good power beyond 3000 rpm, until you get past 5000, when it starts to fade somewhat.
With its 50 hp, the Pegaso isnt exactly the most powerful of beasts, but it will certainly get you from A to B, and remain within speed limits. Those who like to stretch the law will be pleased to know that the Pegaso is capable of more than 160 km/h.
On the road: Easy and practical
Such urban scooters always try to be as practical as possible, and the Pegaso is no exception. There is a storage space underneath the seat.
And there is this box on the fuel tank an idea borrowed from its direct competitor, the BMW Scarver. Add to that a trip computer to make for intuitive riding.
Gadgets, practical features, and a little gauge. As you can see, Aprilia is not hiding its intention to attract an increasingly female clientele. The Pegaso takes us off the beaten track, and with its trails history, it doesnt really have any trouble. It is not bad on the road either, provided you don't push it too hard. There is minimal protection however.
So just who is this new Pegaso Strada aimed at? Those who are looking for a versatile little scooter. Those who are not looking for a lot of power. And those who have 7000 euros to spare. It is more expensive than an XT, but less expensive than a Scarver. It will perhaps be the design and the Italian craftsmanship that will convince you...
