PARIS MOTORSHOW 2008

There some gadgetry going on at the PMS

Constructors, manufactures and equipment suppliers have their latest gadgets and technologies on display at the Paris Motor Show and motorstv.com is shining on the web sport light on a few.

Michelin is introducing its ‘active wheel’ system that was actually first presented at the 2004 PMS. But this time, it is displayed on two cars, the Venturi Volage and the entirely electric Will d’Heuliez that will be available, first for fleet use from the end of 2009. This concept allows for an electric motor to be housed in an individual wheel that manages individual suspension, brakes and, of course, the tyre.

The right hand motor controls the rotation of the tyre, while the one in the centre looks after the suspension and shock absorber. No longer will the vehicle shake when passing over speed bumps, the wheel eliminates chassis roll. Performance hasn’t been forgotten because the ‘active wheel’ system has also been mounted on the Venturi Volage sports car, with a motor on each wheel. And this is also an environmentally friendly technology because there isn’t a gram of CO2 emissions.

Valeo has been busy with the development of its ‘Stop and Start ‘. While it is nothing new with Citroen first introducing it in the 2004 C3, this technology has caught the eye of  carmakers and many are looking to develop their unique systems; At Smart, this innovation was first scene at the end of 2007 and Mercedes has included it in it’s a and B Class ranges.

When speed reaches 8km/h, the engine automatically stops and then re-starts when the driver steps off the gas peddle. In town driving becomes a little less unbearable because everything goes nice and quiet and there are no CO2 emissions when at a red light or stuck in gridlock and the best part is there can be as much as 28%. This explains the buzz around the Smart stand and why the question is asked ‘Why pollute when at rest’?

The nightmare of parallel parking may be coming to an end. Everyone has experienced the stress derived from trying to squeeze into a parking spot in a narrow street while horns blare from behind. Valeo has found the solution for the need of three attempts to park your vehicle. After determining that the place is large enough for the car, the ‘Park 4U’ system takes over and completes the move on its own. All the driver has to do is put the car in reverse, then first gear when the car is parked. The system is currently available in the Volkswagen Touran, Tiguan, Passat, Golf VI, Audi A3 and Skoda Superb.
