AIS: New Britsport series for Caterhams attracts significant interest

Significant interest resulted in a number of signings at Autosport International for the new Britsport endurance format for Caterham race cars.

As part of the value-for-money ethos there are no additional requirements to enter the Britsport Caterham races other than cars carrying some Britsport logos. Each round as a minimum will comprise qualifying plus two 40 minute races with some rounds providing three races of 30/40 minute duration. The mandatory pit stops will allow each race to be shared between two drivers further reducing entry costs.

Britcar founder James Tucker said: “In order to launch a new Caterham race series I recognise that this needs to combine value-for-money together with a fresh approach to Caterham motorsport.

“The new Britsport race series enables Caterham drivers to compete alongside the successful Britcar GT and Production championships with access to the same corporate hospitality and TV coverage. Under the Britsport format, the only requirement for a Caterham to enter our series is that the car complies with the MSA Blue Book in terms of safety.

In recent years it is apparent that Caterham Superlight racing has suffered from reducing grids and this new Britsport series will provide an opportunity for both CSR and R400 drivers to see a return to competitive racing. Due to our more relaxed format, we also hope to see novice Caterham drivers who would like to try out some racing."

David Rowe, Team Manager of Caterham squad dpr motorsport said "The Britsport endurance format with the ability for drivers to share the same car provides racing which will appeal in addition to the Caterham championships. The extended on-track race time accompanied by the Britsport corporate package provides added-value to the existing race formats. The fact the cars can enter the Britsport events unchanged from their existing Caterham championship specification is an important decision that will encourage entries.

“A number of Caterham motorsport teams are already working on the provision of a spares package and technical support similar to that provided for the existing championships."
