The second-placed Fernandez Racing Acura has been disqualified from the Sebring 12 Hours after failing a post-race air intake test.

Fernandez's disqualification moves Dyson Porsche's Butch Leitzinger, Andy Lally and Marino Franchitti up to second, and gives the LMP1-winning Audi of Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Dindo Capello an overall third place.

A bit sad for the guys, me thinks!

Class win for Audi at Sebring

16/03/08 - The Audi R10 TDI remains unbeaten after 22 races. In a turbulent 12-hour race at Sebring (US state of Florida), Audi achieved a 1-2 victory in the LM P1 category with their diesel-powered sports cars

Following eight Sebring victories in a row, however, Audi had to be content with class glory in the American endurance classic for the first time. In the overall classification, the two R10 TDI prototypes finished third and sixth.

At the mid-point in the race, the two Audi R10 TDI cars were running in front of the field. Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockenfeller and Marco Werner had a 40-second lead over their team mates Dindo Capello, Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen, when the right turbo charger and the front brake discs had to be changed on their R10 TDI. This cost them 16 laps and any chance to fight for victory. An off track excursion at dusk plus two stop-and-go penalties further delayed them.

The number 1 "sister car"

I do feel a bit sad for Fernandez but I've never been a fan of his so I'm very happy that the other Dyson (with Guy Smith driving) got a class podium! :D

not that sad as the air intake is very important to the power of the car and might be a little bit of an explanation to why it suddenly got alot of pace over the other team car when the air got denser.

As for AUDI commiting to the ALMS season i am very shocked as they are basically gonna be wasting there time against the LMP2 cars on most of the tracks i just glad the ACO standing firm and keeping the lmp1 lmp2 split in place.

@ Mikeward:

Please don ´t get me wrong, if they are in breach with the regulations, then they must be punished.

I was a bit curious as well, as to their sudden burst of speed, and if they have changed the intake system to bypass the limiter, then it would explain a lot. Speculation, anyway they reliaze their error, and Acura has taken all the blame for the team.

As to the Audi ALMS deal: I don ´t get it as well. Audi must have been busy with the calculators, and proved that being there with the TDI cars is worth more than staying away, from a commercial standpoint. But they will be wasting their time sportingwise, with the current IMSA regulations.

Have also seen the ALMS in Miami, Grand-Am in Mexico City and been to Le Mans twice. Not to mention various trips to Donington/Croft/Silverstone, etc.

Sadly this year it looks like work will stop me from getting to may meetings. :( Which is why I love the internet so much! [lol]

You should get yourself down to Silverstone for the FIA GT meeting the 19th/20th of April......by the way do you have any Corvette photos from your trips to Le Mans or the ALMS races? If you do I would be interested in seeing them.

Would love to but it's going to be a busy few months for me at work and when it's your own business you don't get much time off!

My photos from Laguna are online at:-

This is probably my favourite Corvette one, taken on the Friday lunchtime during the Pit Stop Challenge.

Although in the ALMS you can get very close to the cars just before they hit the track!

If you wade through the album you'll find more! :)

Hello Pim,

Yes the Guadix test went very satisfactory, as dit the official LMS test at Paul Ricard in which we were the fastest LMP2. Having said that, we are in no way underestimating the amount of work we still have to do and the first race in Barcelona is going to be quite a challenge, which we are obviously looking forward to.

There are some movies online from the Guadix test if you are interested:

Thank you for the shots from the test, what a nice racecar, that Porsche RS Spyder from van Merksteijn :)

Thanks everyone for all the positive comments about our Sebring coverage - I will be anchoring at least five more ALMS races, possibly six when Speed are running live.

Next live ALMS broadcast on Motors TV is scheduled for Salt Lake City (May 1:8, followed by Mosport (Aug 24), Detroit (Aug 30) and Petit Le Mans (October 04); Lime Rock on July 12 has yet to be confirmed as live, and if it is, we'll be there.

NBC and ABC races will be delayed, but Motors TV will still show the highlights a few days later.

Regarding the LMS, Motors TV will continue to show all the races live and in full, as in previous years. So although the Le Mans 24 Hours may be going elsewhere, Motors TV remains the world's premier sportscar broadcaster, with the world's premier sporstcar forum. Keep it up!
