Pedro de la Rosa could shortly become the first driver to be confirmed as part of Prodrive's inaugural race lineup for 2008.

The Spanish newspaper Marca suggests that the 36-year-old, who is currently a test driver for McLaren, is waiting this week to hear if a seat with the British team has been reserved for him.

His link to Prodrive is obvious, with David Richards' new outfit expected to become a full McLaren customer team next year with a Woking-built chassis and Mercedes-Benz V8 engine.

Marca said the first official Prodrive announcements could be made at the edge of the Turkish grand prix this weekend.

Also touted as frontrunners for Prodrive seats are de la Rosa's fellow McLaren test driver Gary Paffett, and Paffett's French-Canadian DTM colleague Bruno Spengler.

It would be good to see de la Rosa return to the starting grid!

Pedro is a solid driver who won't make many mistakes, although he's pace is not exactly electrifying.

I think Richards should take the gamble and sign Jenson Button.

Granted he might announce halfway through the season he's terminating his contract and moving to Super Aguri due to some technicality that the barmaid down the local pub has found, but unlikely as last time he did such a thing Richards won the court battles, so that shouldn't be a worry... they also made a good team at Honda when not fighting...

...and you have to admit, Mr Kipling does make exceedingly good cakes.

I don't think Honda would allow that, they seem to love Button too much. That's why they locked him into a long contract.

Prodrive is probably Button's only realistic chance of success, even thought it's unlikely to happen.

Producing sufficient engines is not going to be a problem given the engine freeze in F1 at the moment but building new chassis and keeping up a constant stream of parts in the course of a season is a lot more difficult. McLaren obviously does not want to be seen to be supplying a team with uncompetitive machinery, if only because it would not be good for the team's image. It has long been assumed that the only way around this problem was for McLaren to expand its own production facilities to cope, but there is another possibility that needs to be examined. In the modern era, production of F1 parts has been revolutionised with computerised manufacturing techniques. Once a design is completed it can be manufactured at multiple locations if the quality of the production is up to the main factory's standards.

Prodrive has its own composite manufacturing facilities, housed in a 1600 sq.m facility in Milton Keynes. This supplies advanced composites from Prodrive's racing teams and for customers in the automotive, aerospace and marine industries. The facility includes three autoclaves and machinery to produce pre-preg composite components. Prodrive already does work for a number of F1 teams (perhaps even McLaren) and so it is entirely possible that McLaren could build extra chassis for Prodrive and then allow development parts to built by Prodrive. It might even be possible for Prodrive to build the chassis as well, if McLaren criteria can be met.

Buying McLaren's design is rumoured to be costing Prodrive about $100m but while this is a huge investment, it should pay off quickly if the new team can produce good results.

I just hope that it does happen, because Richards is still saying that he has 3 options although McLaren are indeed closest.
An announcement is expected next month. Hopefully during the first GP weekend in September... which I think is Monza.

Yup, Monza is the first GP in September, Mclaren is surly Prodrive's best option?

I can actually see Prodrive making big progress in the near future, they have the motorsport knowolwedge to be successful in F1.

I see Pedro topped Day 4 of Monza testing... can't do his chances of a Prodrive seat any harm at all :)

Yep, it can't harm his chances at all.

Although the Mclaren was much quicker than any other car at the test.
