It is suggested in Autosport that the IRL's continuation cannot be certain, because it has NEVER made a profit, and Tony George propped it up by using money from the IMS. Now he has been removed as head of both IRL and the IMS by a boardroom coup by his three sisters, that money is not now there. Ironic that with him being instrumental in the demise of Champ Cars, his own pet series should now be at death's door.
