Hey guys and girls!

Just thought i'd say high its my first post and wantedto get views of everyone.

I currantly race karts at club level and am doing well,I raced karts 12 years ago raced in the british champs and had some very good years! But after 12 years out I got the bug for racing again!.

All those years ago I had a stint in formula ford which I loved but unfortunalty I couldn't get sponsors so dad had to cough up as i was only 15 (Good old dads) any how i'm thinking about going back into cars but not single seaters as I know how expensive it can be when it goes wrong (Sorry dad) I really want to do just a club series in a saloon car championship anybody got any ideas on what series is good but also on a very tight budget as i have to pay myself now :( any views would be great!

Regards

Steve

A guy i know who used to race karts and then legends has just got back into racing in the MR2 Championship. He's driving with a company called Rogue Motorsports who do hire drives for the weekend and, i think, basically run the championship.

Prices seem to be around £900 for a double header weekend!

Theres some videos on youtube that are worth a look at!

Another one, the V8 Trophy series, formerly the SCSA and prior to that ASCAR, has a new face this year with the V8's blasting round road courses. All lots of fun, though not as much fun as the oval.

Still, they are trying to get numbers up with the cars being readily available (theres 22 i believe in the UK in that spec, and the grid for V8 Trophy races also has the V Sport Super Silouhettes.

See www.v8trophy.com for info about joining et al

www.v8trophy.com

Quote:
After using the first two races of the 2008 VSR series season as a testing bed to prove that 5.7ltr V8 Chevy powered Ascar’s can be used in anger on circuits, we exceeded our own expectations and proved that without a shadow of a doubt  they can be used in anger and can win, putting on a fantastic show along with the VSR series cars.

Seeing Colin White’s # 78 Chevrolet Monty Carlo fully airborne at Cadwell Park over the top of the mountain has shown  that our Oval days are behind us for now and racing these cars on circuits is much more fun than even Colin expected.

Colin White at Snetterton Copyright© 2008 Witolda Maruszewska

Using Hoosier tyres, the car has grip a plenty, allows the car to power slide whilst being very forgiving and giving good rates of tyre wear. Colin had the tyres lit up all the way up the mountain at Cadwell but never felt out of control, Rob Compton said of his run at Cadwell “I just could not believe how much fun it was and how well Revolution’s #99 Protex car went around here, I had one hand on the steering wheel, one on the shift and driving it with the rear wheels, I would not of believed it of these cars, awesome, roll on Brands in June and Lydden at the end of May”

Changing the cars, which are available for around £14,500 converted, takes on a number of jobs on the car, watching them move around a circuit like Cadwell has shown the changes that have been made to the cars have made them more akin to OZ V8’s rather than Nascar but they can be easily changed back to an Oval set up if needed in the future, the aim is to keep the changes as cost effective as possible but allow them to change back to an Oval set up with no cost at all.

Series requirements and race costs are:

* National A Licence (which can be obtained in a fairly short space of time as Paul Bowman can testify!)
* Registration £1100 +vat which includes a set of wet tyres
* Race entry £250 per meeting
* Tyres are £125 + vat each, a full set allowed at first meeting then a max of 2 per meeting, a set look like they will last at least 2 meetings.
* 100 ltrs of fuel on average with Millers CVL allowed protecting the engine.
* Change of oils after every meeting will look after your V8, nobody has had an engine rebuild in the last 3 seasons, Colin’s has not been done in 4 years !!!! The engines seem to be bullet proof and getting Quicker, being restricted to 6500 rpm means they are never overstressed and of course they sound Gorgeous !!!!!
The cars are all the same under the body shell allowing cost effective parts prices, the bodies are of 3 types, Ford, Chevrolet and Pontiac.

So if you are looking to race a 460 bhp rear wheeled fun loving race car that sound’s like a race car, which goes like a race car, handles like a race car and above all does not cost an arm and a leg then why look any further?

And they do do hire drives (though damage needs to be paid for!)

Caterhams are another relatively inexpensive formula.

Though as with all of these, inexpensive basically means less than 20 grand or so, theres not much you can do a full season for for less than 10 grand (V8 Trophy just maybe, same with MR2, Legends too probably!)

Having said that, theres not much that can beat the thrill of karting if you get into a decent club and dont get to the stage whereby the people with the money once again win everything!

it depends on what you mean by cheap.

I raced karts for many years and then moved to cars, I didn't want to spend lots of cash and have engines tuned all the while. I wanted the same friendly approach in the paddock (I raced endurance karts) with a ready helping hand if something went wrong and I wanted as close as possible to arrive and drive with my own car. For the money mentioned below I was consistently in the top 5 and my mate (also from karts and with the same spend) won the championship most of the 8 years we competed.

Solutions:

Mighty Mini - BRSCC. http://www.brscc.co.uk/mighty-minis.html

Full grids and you can buy a car for 3-6k and race competitively. Two sets of tyres (inter and full wet) should last you a year. One service mid season of the engine is all you need. BRSCC and MM membership and then race fees. Apart from that wash the car and turn up.

The racing is very competitive 1 second splitting the top 10 in qually is the norm. Due to the lack of aero positions are changing constantly. Great paddock camaraderie and support. Great fun.

Locost 750MC - http://www.750mc.co.uk/F-locost.php

All elements are much the same as above. Cost in 750 is cheaper per race and there is no club membership. Grids full and great friendly racing but very competitive.

Check out the race stats to see how competitive they both are, they may not be the fastest formulas but they are some of the most competitive.

Have fun

I race in 750 Formula which is about as cheap as it gets. The regulations are really stable and designed to minimise cost. Basically the regs are:

Sports racing car

Space frame chassis

Fiat 1108cc FIRE engine in virtually standard trim

Control cam

4 speed gearbox

Control slick tyres (£75 each and last pretty much a season)

Front or rear engine

Live rear axle

Essentially, there isn't much you can spend money on except testing - and most of us don't have time for that. Racing is close and clean, drivers are friendly and a good mix of ages, skills and backgrounds.

I recon a competitive season will cost in the region of £3,500 - £5,000 not including buying a car. The cars are light and quick (52.7 sec at Brands, 51.5 at Mallory) - I think it's the best kept secret in UK motor sport - and you race with the 750 Motor Club which is the best club for amateur racers.. Check out the forum at www.750formula.co.uk
