That is bad news, with the utes being 10 years old this year and a stellar schedule laid on for Clipsal next weekend!! If that is the case I can always post a race report. Here is what is lined up....

Steven Bradbury, Paul Morris, Cameron McConville, Charlie O’Brien, Andrew Miedecke Tony Longhurst, Max Dumesny, Leanne Tander, Steve Owen, Luke Youlden and Robbie Madison are just a few of the names on the entry list for Round 1 of the 2010 Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series - protected by Armor All, during next weekends Clipsal 500 at Adelaide Parklands. (11-14th March.)

The legends will battle for outright honours in the “Ten Years of Legends” race, a celebration of a decade of door to door V8 Ute racing.

All previous V8 Ute Champions will be in attendance over the weekend including inaugural winner Rod Wilson, Marcus Zukanovic, Grant Johnson, Layton Crambrook and reigning champ Jack Elsegood. Back to back winners Warren Luff (2002/03) and Damien White (2004/05) will be viewing from the sideline with Luff as the driver standards advisor for the V8 Ute category and White in between his duties as Fujitsu V8 Supercar operations manager.

The V8 Ute Racing Series has accumulated 170 laps of Adelaide Parklands circuit over the years with Adelaide’s Charlie “Handlebars” Kovacs celebrating his 10th appearance, Gary Baxter and Jack Elsegood racking up 9 appearances.

Baxter will be back to defend his Clipsal 500 title with other 2009 top three winners, Ryal Harris and Kim Jane all looking to claim a podium win again and take out the legends race. Harris will race with hillclimb legend Andrew Schultz and Kim Jane with V8 Supercar and Fujitsu Series winning Legend, Steve Owen.

“What a great celebration for the series 10th year – and the Legends race itself will be a cracker,” explained category manager Craig Denyer. “To survive 10 years in this sport is an achievement in itself, however to celebrate our 10th year with such a competitive group of drivers shows just how popular the V8 Ute series has become. We’re thankful to Jason Allen and the SA Motor Sport Board for the opportunity to showcase our 10 years at the track where it all started, and I know the fans won't be disappointed.”

Newcomers to the Series for 2010 include former V8 Supercar driver David Sieders who will be driving at the Clipsal 500 with legendary FPV General Manager Rod Barrett. “Rocket” Rod raced in Australia and the UK during the 80’s and 90’s, winning the 1985 Tassie Street Race Championship before racing Group N, Sports Sedans and other categories in the UK. He was involved in a massive crash at Brands Hatch in 1991 which effectively ended his professional racing career, before being appointed General Manager of the internationally known Jim Russell Driving School. He returned to Australia as General Manager of FPR, before taking on the GM’s role at Ford Performance Vehicles.

Ford F6 12HR driver Jeremy Gray will also join the Series and race with former V8 Ute winner and 2010 NASCA development Legend, George Miedecke. Miedecke will race head to head with his father Andrew, who will be driving with Jack Elsegood in the Coopers Ford.

19 year old Rhys McNally will take the reins from older brother Glenn in the West Coast Racings Holden VE and will have his sights set on the Racer Industries Rookie of the year, something Glenn won in 2008.

In a last minute signing, “Captain” Rob Jarvis has enlisted veteran sprint car champion Max Dumesny as his legend for the BVC Ford. Dumesny is a 3 time Australian Sprintcar Championship and 7 times Worlds Series Sprintcar Champion. Subject to licence clearance, he will test at Mallala next Wednesday.

The V8 Utes will kickstart their ten year celebrations when they hit the track on Thursday, 11th March with the below schedule to follow:

Thursday, 11 March 8:50am Practice 1 – Legend

Thursday, 11 March 12:35pm Practice 2 – V8 Ute Series Driver

Captain Rob signs Sunny Cowgirls for V8 Ute’s Clipsal Singalong

Leading Australian country music duo “The Sunny Cowgirls” will perform an informal acoustic set in the V8 Ute Paddock this weekend at the Clipsal 500. They will play as part of the Series tenth year celebrations, which will begin with Round 1 of the 2010 Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by Armor All at Adelaide Parklands, 11 – 14th March.

The Sunny Cowgirls appear courtesy of V8 Ute driver Captain Robert Jarvis who has an affinity with Country Music that has seen him in the past form a tight friendship and racing alliance with multiple Golden Guitar winner Adam Brand.

The likeable hard charger from Billinudgel on the NSW/QLD border has unearthed another Country music connection and pulled off quite a coup enlisting the duo as his “grid girls” for the weekend.

These sassy sibling songstresses (Sophie and Celeste Clabburn) have never been to a race event, let alone one like The Clipsal 500 so Captain Rob was keen to oblige and even cheekily suggested that they adorn his starting spot on the grid each day.

“They’ve agreed but I don’t know that they really know what to expect,” grins the cheeky Jarvis, “however it’s great exposure for them and they’ll have a fantastic time.”

Sophie and Celeste have stormed on to the country music scene with their earthy, cheeky and unique form of musical Australiana and now have four albums under their belt – the most recent (Summer) being released in January of this year.

There’s a strong connection for the girls with former Jarvis garage-mate and team racer Adam Brand.

He’s their mentor and in many ways the man who discovered them.

The plucky sisters who had worked as jillaroos, fruit pickers, roustabouts, cattle ranch hands and even enrolled in a wool classing course while playing country music at agricultural shows, landed themselves in the CMAA College of Country Music in Tamworth at a seminar on marketing and networking conducted by singer Adam early in 2005. They listened intently, took him at his word and handed over a copy of their independent album of covers and originals, Little Bit Rusty. As Sophie recalls: “I walked up to him and gave him a copy – he looked at it and said ‘I’m going to play it in my Ute when I leave here’ and we were like, ‘yeah, right, he’s not going to listen to it’.”

He listened along with Compass Brothers Records head Graham Thompson and within weeks Australia was listening to an album that shot straight to number three on the ARIA Country Charts (with Golden Guitar nominations to follow.).

Now, the Sunny Cowgirls face their toughest gig – standing on the grid at The Clipsal 500.

A coup for Country Music and V8 Ute fans will be the fact that the girls will appear throughout the event in Captain Rob’s pit area and sign autographs too.

“We’re all really excited about having Sophie and Celeste on the team,” grins Jarvis, “We might not be Dancing on the Darling (one of the Cowgirls’ hit singles) but we’ll them clapping and cheering them at the Clipsal 500.”

The Sunny Cowgirls will play in the V8 Ute Paddock Saturday, 13th March at 1:00pm and on Sunday, 14th at 9:00am. Below is a full schedule including signing sessions and races.

Sideway and Slick too quick in V8 Utes Qualifying

David “Sideways” Sieders claimed the Armor All Pole Award in a spectacular opening day debut at Round One of the 2010 Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by Armor All – steering his One Steel #8 XR8 Falcon around the Clipsal 500 street course today to best a classy field.

Former V8 Ute frontrunner and now NASCAR Development Series driver George “Slick” Miedecke also claimed his third pole in a row in a V8 Ute in the alternate “Legends” Qualifying session at the first day of Clipsal 500 action.

Former V8 Supercar driver, Sieders, displayed his obvious skill from start to finish setting the fastest time early in the 20 minute session with a 1.38.2718s lap.

It looked for much of the session like being a Ford 1-2 when reigning champion Jack “The Hustler” Elsegood was running second in the time sheets behind Sieders in his Coopers Clear Ale Ford BF Falcon, until West Aussie Holden driver Grant “Grunta” Johnson flew through the field in the last two and a half minutes of the session to claim second only one tenth of a second behind Sieders.

Johnson, who is paired with legendary former Touring Car star Tony Longhurst this weekend, might well be racing his last V8 Ute round in the foreseeable future as he attempts to source sponsorship to allow him to compete in further rounds.

South Aussie Holden Hero Gary “Chuckie” Baxter (Sage Automation Racing) gave it his all on the last lap but it wasn’t quite enough to crack the top three and he was forced to settle for fourth ahead of Jesus Racing’s Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher in fifth and Ice-Break Racing’s Gary “The Boss” MacDonald in sixth.

2009 Clipsal podium-getter Ryal “The Kid” Harris pushed over the line in seventh in his Holden just ahead of the ever-improving Brad “Packers” Patton (DC Shoes Falcon) in eighth, the Bob Jane T-Marts SS Holden of Kim Jane in ninth and impressive newcomer Jeremy “Shades of” Gray in the ex George Miedecke XR8 Falcon who rounded out the top ten.

In the legends qualifying session it was a battle of the former V8 Ute drivers with George “Slick” Miedecke and New Zealander Chris Pither (CNW XR8 Falcon) battling it out for top spot.

Pither, the current New Zealand V8 Ute Series points leader, sat on top of the timing sheets until the final minutes when “Slick” Miedecke worked his magic and snatched away the #1 spot with a sizzling 1.38.3707 lap.

George Miedecke and Pither were trailed by a veritable who’s who of V8 Supercars with “Lucky” Luke Youlden, Steve “the Ox” Owen, Marcus “Mayhem” Zukanovic, Cameron “Conkers” McConville, Ric “The Disciple” Bates, Paul “the Dude” Morris, Tim “Payday” Leahey and “Mad Andy” Miedecke.

There were some disappointments in qualifying with “Captain Rob” Jarvis missing the session altogether due to the crew narrowly running out of time to repair gearbox damage from the previous outing.

The #72 entry of Pedro “Skater” Marusic was black flagged for a window net infringement whilst 2008 V8 Ute Series Champion Layton Crambrook has suffered wiring issues in his Ice-Break Racing Holden since the start of proceedings preventing the hard charging Territorian from having an impact on the event thus far.

South Aussie hard charger Craig “Thirsty” Dontas and gritty Sydney veteran George “Hollywood” Elliot share the dubious honour of similar mechanical woes in their respective Holdens.

The second day of the 2010 Clipsal 500 will see Race One of the Series contested at 5pm South Australian time.

Race 2 and 3 will be televised LIVE on Network Seven. Race 2 Saturday, 13th March at 1:00pm (EDST) and Race 3 in a 1 hour live program on Sunday, 14th March also at 1:00pm (ESDT).

V8 Utes Australia

Miedecke delivers slick lesson to Clipsal V8 Ute Legend Field

NASCAR development driver George Miedecke dominated the Yokohama V8 Ute Legend race – protected by Armor All with a flag to flag win at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide today. Driving a Ford XR8 Falcon Ute, the Charlotte based young gun ran side by side with New Zealand V8 Ute Series leader Chris Pither for the first 3 corners, before taking the lead under brakes at Turn 5.

Pither chased hard in the Peter Burnitt owned Ford, however was pinged by race officials for rolling at the start and served a drive through penalty mid race.

Steve Owen in the Bob Jane T Marts Holden finished second ahead of Luke Youlden’s Ice Break Racings Holden and Marcus Zukanovic in the Select TV Ford. Mal Rose, Rick Bates, Tim Leahey, Andrew Miedecke in the Coopers Clear Ford, Steve Robinson and veteran touring car legend Charlie O’Brien rounded out the top ten.

V8 Supercar Team owner Paul Morris stalled on the warm up lap and was last away, however refused officials orders to start from the rear of the field and was also served a mid race penalty.

Cameron McConville in the Gary Baxter SAGE Holden had a serious engine fire as a result of an oil leak while running in the top 5 and stopped mid race, while reigning NZ Ute Champion Matt Lockwood suffered a similar problem in the Steve Hodges ISRI Truck Seats Holden.

Legendary motorcycle stunt rider Robbie Maddison slam dunked V8 Supercar

Veteran Tony Kavich at Turn 9 which also involved Adelaide’s Chris Smerdon.

Both Utes suffered heavy damage in the incident.

Though it was a bruising affair the first ever Legends event was a rousing success with the vocal crowd on hand really getting into the racing and the spirit of competition.

“I was really surprised at the standard of competition,” said rally star Ric Bates, “when you think about the amount of guys in that race with V8 Supercar experience it was an achievement in itself to finish top ten.”

Touring car legend Tony Longhurst had a ball.

“I didn’t realize this series was so much fun. The cars are great to drive and the series itself is very well conducted. I had a ball racing out there. The harder you drive the car the slower you seem to go, you really have to finesse the Utes.”

FPV General Manager Rod Barrett was also sold on the V8 Ute Series experience.

“It’s fantastic. To get back out there and race like I did almost twenty years ago was a real blast for me. It was also an interesting twist that I lined up on the grid alongside Mrs Tander (Leanne Tander, wife of HRT Holden hero Garth) so I was determined to beat her at least to the first corner.”

Chris Pither soldiered back to 11th in the CNW Falcon ahead of “No Baloney” Tony Longhurst (Permacoat SS Holden) in 12th, James “Thruster” Brock (GBF Underground Mining SS Holden) in 13th, Charlie Kovacs Jr (Wilson Security SS Holden) in a career best 14th, Matt “Spacer” Holt in the Wake Up #88 SS Holden in 15th, Paul “Dude” Morris in the Samboy Chips/Hungry Jacks SS came back to 16th, Colin “Khe Sanh” Dunn placed 17th, Steven “Doina” Bradbury (I-SEEK XR8) in 18th, Brendon Tucker in the Variety Motorsports SS Holden in 19th and Robbie “Madman” Maddison rounding out the twenty.

FPV General Manager Rod Barrett finished 21st in the Alltrans #8 ahead of Tim Shaw’s NRW #26 SS Holden, Rod “Redline” Wilson in the Eaglepro Hydraulic Lifts SS Holden, South Aussie Andrew Schultz in the Barnacle Bill’s #58 SS Holden, Donut King main man Tony Alford in the #72 Ice-break Ice Coffee Falcon, Marshall Brewer in the #55 Vittoria Coffee SS Holden and Leanne Tander in the Thirsty Camel #22 rounded out the finishers.

As the tapes have to come from Oz, I would not be surprised if we did not see the Clipsal races until May.
