Scirocco Cup: Brundle to take on Herbert at Brands

Ex-British F1 stars Johnny Herbert and Martin Brundle will go head-to-head in the Scirocco R-Cup at Brands Hatch in September.

The pair have been invited by VW to contest the DTM support race in Kent which will be held on the Indy circuit.

Brundle, 51, already has experience of the car after finishing third overall at the championship’s inaugural meeting at Hockenheim back in April where he best fellow motorsport greats Carlos Sainz, Frank Biela and Jacques Lafitte.

While Herbert cannot boast the same specific knowledge, he will have experience of racing a similar front-wheel drive machine at Brands to count on after contesting the BTCC event there in a Team Dynamics Honda Civic last season.

“VW offered me the drive and I jumped at it,” said the 46-year-old. “Although the race is on the Indy track, which is quite small, I am more used to driving front-wheel drive cars these days.

“I can’t wait to take Martin on: he may have experience of the cars, but, for a change, I’ve got youth on my side!”
