Lloyd scores first Scirocco R-Cup win

Daniel Lloyd described his maiden victory in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup as ‘the best race of his life’ as the British driver won a captivating battle at the Lausitzring last weekend.

The race saw numerous different leaders and overtaking moves as Lloyd eventually came out on top in a five-car fight for the win, boosting his hopes in the championship fight.

American driver James Mobley started on pole position and was able to defend his position at the start as a gaggle of cars followed behind including Ola Nilsson, championship leader Matuesz Lisowki, Lloyd and Aditya Patel.

After an exciting opening half of the race, the lead battle boiled down to Mobley, Lloyd and Lisowski and while the three swapped places on several occasions, it was Lloyd who eventually came out on top, taking the chequered flag 1.417 seconds clear of Mobley with Lisowski a few tenths further back in third.

Patel claimed fourth, and was closing on the lead battle in the dying stages of the race, while Nilsson completed the top five.

"It was the best race of my life,” said a delighted Lloyd. “I’m extremely happy; it’s such a good feeling. As early as on my first lap I used the push-to-pass button three times to push forwards.

“I want to thank Mateusz Lisowski and JD Mobley because everyone was putting up a fierce but always fair defence against the others. And I’d like to particularly thank my father, Neil, and Andy from my sponsor TNTpost.”

With Moto2 star Stefan Bradl withdrawing from the race through ill health, the battle amongst the ‘legends’ cars saw motorbike stars Ralf Waldmann, Max Neukirchner, Dirk Raudies and Aleix Esparago fighting for the honour of best guest driver.

Waldmann eventually triumphed, fighting his way through the field and past several of the series’ regular drivers, to claim tenth overall, one position ahead of Esparago.
