World Cup-winning footballers join Scirocco celebrity race

German football legends Andreas Brehme and Karl-Heinz Riedle will go head-to-head at this weekend's VW Scircocco R-Cup celebrity race at Munich's Olympic Stadium. They will pair with actresses Yvonne de Bark and Anne Wis for the celebrity event.

Brehme and Riedle were team-mates for their country's 1990 FIFA World Cup triumph, with Brehme finding particular fame as the scorer of the 85th minute winner in the Germans' final encounter with Argentina.

Riedle has prior experiecne of the Scirocco machine having contested last year’s charity race at Italian venue Adria, and admits he didn't find the transition from road driver to racer simple.

“From the outside things always look easy," said former Dortmund and Liverpool striker Riedler. "But when you’re in the cockpit yourself you realise how strenuous the job of a racer is. And you have to first get used to hitting the brakes so hard – that’s a totally different feeling than driving in normal traffic.”

The Scirocco's Olympic Stadium event will not be its first at a football ground: the cars were part of last year's Race of Champions, held at Dusseldorf's Esprit Arena, home to German side Fortuna Düsseldorf.
