Lisowski extends Scirocco points lead at Red Bull Ring

Polish racer Marcus Lisowski and Germany's Stefano Proetto took a victory apiece in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup's visit to the re-developed Red Bull Ring last weekend.

Lisowski claimed the spoils in a chaotic opening race, a rain-soaked track leading to several incidents at the Spielberg-based venue. The race was turbulent from the off, with a spinning Jonas Gießler collected by Maiken Rasmussen and legend racers Thomas Morgenstern and Sven Hannawald both forced to park up with crash damage.

Lisowski however was able to keep his head despite the difficult conditions and survived a safety car period to beat James Mobley and Ola Nilsson across the line.

"The result is fantastic," Lisowski beamed post-race. "Being the second winner at the second race – what more can you ask for? I had a good start. Fortunately, I didn’t really notice much about the accident behind me. In turn one I defended myself against an attack by Ola Nilsson, but that was a fair manoeuvre."

Proetto then prevented Lisowski from completing a clean sweep of the weekend by beating the Pole in the second race as the rain again made conditions tricky on the Austrian circuit. Dennis Trebing completed the podium in third.

"I’m overjoyed," Proetto said afterwards. "That was a hard job because Lisowski was breathing down my neck during the whole race. I couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. At the end I still had one push-to-pass left for the last lap which allowed me to get away from my immediate rivals."

Ski jumper Hannawald was the highest placed legend, taking 18th at the flag. The German will contest the ADAC GT Masters at the same circuit later this year and was pleased with the track time.

"For me it was important to have the chance to get to know the track,” said Hannawald. “In the beginning I had some difficulties adjusting to the front-wheel drive Scirocco but towards the end I understood the car. It does give me a bit of satisfaction to have won against the other Legends because I didn’t want to be just brushed off."

Lisowski continues to lead the championship standings on 108 points with Proetto his nearest challenger on 86. The series' next event takes place at Germany's Lausitzring over the weekend of June 17-18.
