Scirocco Cup: Former British F1 stars to do battle at Brands

Former British Formula One stars Martin Brundle, Mark Blundell, Johnny Herbert and Derek Bell will do battle in the VW Scirocco R Cup at Brands Hatch this weekend.

The quartet, who between them boast 389 Grand Prix starts and seven victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours, have been invited to race as ‘legends’ in the eco-conscious, manufacturer-backed series which will support the DTM at the Kent circuit.

Brundle has already raced in the new series before earlier in the year at Hockenheim and the 51-year-old made an instant impression with a podium finish in his first run in the car.

"I immensely enjoyed the race,” said Brundle. "I was really surprised to find myself standing on the podium next to two very young racers at Hockenheim. The permanent entrants have gathered additional experience with the car in the meantime – this will make it more difficult for me at Brands Hatch to clinch a similarly good result as I did at Hockenheim.”

"That such grandees of British motorsport are part of the field of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup shows the high prestige which this innovative one-make cup also enjoys in the motherland of motorsport,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "I’m eager to see how these red-blooded racers from Formula 1 will present themselves in the competition with the young permanent entrants.”
