Former DTM champion Kurt Thiim and ex-F1 racer Jan Lammers are among the guest drivers set for the VW Scirocco R Cup races at Lausitzring this weekend.
Thiim is one of three former DTM stars on the grid along with Harald Grohs and Klaus Niedzwiedz. Grohs twice finished third in the German-based touring car series before going on to win the German Porsche Carrera Cup, while Niedzwiedz was DTM runner-up in 1989 and also enjoyed success in the World Touring Car Championship.
The 54-year-old Lammers, who now runs his own ‘Racing for Holland’ team that competes in sportscar racing and runs the PSV Eindhoven entry in Superleague Formula, will make his debut in the series. He is a veteran of 41 Grands Prix and also raced in sportscars and touring cars. His last competitive action came in the Dutch GT4 Championship and German-based ADAC GT Masters last season.
Also joining the grid is Slim Borgudd. The Swede raced in ten Grands Prix for ATS and Tyrrell in the early 1980s before going on to enjoy success in a diverse range of motorsport disciplines, including winning the European Super Truck Championship. He is also a successful musician who was a session drummer with ABBA.
The five drivers will fill the seats reserved for ‘legends’ of the sport, following in the footsteps of Martin Brundle and Jacques Laffitte were among the star names to drive in the season-opener at Hockenheim last month.
“The debut of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup at Hockenheim met with a lot of positive response,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "In addition to the innovative technologies of our new one-make cup the new sporting format hit the bull’s eye.
“Not only the permanent entrants but the legends too delivered suspense galore on the track. It was great to see that the spectators and drivers alike enjoyed the race. I’m sure that the second round at the EuroSpeedway will be equally successful – particularly with true racers like Thiim, Grohs, Lammers and company on the grid.”
