V8: Championship to oversee first CotF prototypes

V8 Supercars Australia has announced it will build two Car of the Future prototypes in the coming months.

The new-spec cars are due to be phased in throughout 2012 before the championship fully adopts CotF regulations the following season.

But championship bosses are mindful of ironing out issues with the design before each team is tasked with building its new machines in a “flat pack” format. As such, Pace Innovations has been tasked with constructing two identical chassis which will then be shelled as either a Ford Falcon FG or Holden Commodore VE.

V8 Supercars Australia Director of Racing Adam Perry said that both cars are scheduled for completion by April 1 2011.

“At that stage we will hand over a full build specification to teams so they can commence building the cars and of course because it’s been built and tested they will not have the same issues they’ve had with prototypes in the past,” he said.

“Because the design is not really a Ford or Holden design and the chassis is the same, V8 Supercars has said we will take on the building. With the revised engine management system and wiring loom we want to make sure when its handed over to teams there are no bugs in the system.”
