V8 star Richards succumbs to cancer

V8 Supercars driver Jason Richards has lost his battle with cancer. The New Zealand-born racer was 35.

Richards was diagnosed with the aggressive adrenal cortical carcinoma last November and subsequently sat out 2011, his first season away from Supercars since joining the series in 2000.

Today it was announced that the three-time Bathurst runner-up had succumbed to the illness in a statement from his family. A memorial service is planned to take place at Sandown Raceway.

Richards started 287 Supercars races during his decade in the series. Prior to this he was a three-time winner of the New Zealand Touring Car title and had also contested the British
Formula Ford championship. He leaves a wife, Charlotte, and daughters Sienna and Olivia.
