Jamie Whincup topped the timesheets in practice for the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide on Friday.
The Team Vodafone driver, fresh from a clean sweep of race victories in the V8 Supercar Championship’s opening rounds in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, set a best time of 1:21.3729 in his Holden Commodore VE, just a couple of tenths quicker than Shane van Gisbergen’s SP Tools Racing Ford Falcon.
However, Whincup admitted that Friday’s practice sessions had been hard going at the notoriously challenging street circuit.
“That was a really tough session,” the reigning champion said. “We slowly progressed with the car but it is so hectic around this circuit which makes it hard to get a clean lap.
“I was also sin-binned for two minutes for an infringement at Turn 2 but hey, the rules are the rules and I will make sure I don’t make the same mistake again.”
Paul Dumbrell was a fine third in the Bottle-O Racing Team Falcon after a quick lap on new tyres with Jason Richard’s Team BOC Commodore fourth and Whincup’s Team Vodafone team-mate, Craig Lowndes, in fifth.
Less than a second covered the top 13 cars, meaning the battle to make it through to top 10 qualifying tomorrow is sure to be fierce.
