Lowndes awarded Barry Sheene Medal

V8 Supercars championship runner-up Craig Lowndes has been awarded the 2011 Barry Sheene Medal.

Three-time title-winner Lowndes scooped the accolade for his sense of fair play and all-round contribution to the series. It is the third time he has won the medal following back-to-back wins in 2005 and '06.

The presentation was made during V8 Supercars' Gala Dinner at Sydney Convention Centre following Sunday's title decider at the Homebush Street Circuit. Lowndes missed out on his fourth crown to team-mate Jamie Whincup despite outscoring the 28-year-old over the course of the weekend.

Whincup was awarded his championship trophy during the evening whilst inaugural Supercar title-winner Glenn Seton was inducted into the series' Hall of Fame. The Clipsal 500, which takes place on the Adelaide Street Circuit, won the Event of the Year accolade.
