V8 Supercars community to pay respects to Richards

The V8 Supercars community will pay its respects to late racer Jason Richards next week (Monday January 9) in a memorial service at Sandown Raceway.

Supercars veteran Richards passed away last month following a year-long battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. The Kiwi, who started 287 races during his decade in the series, left a wife and two children.

The service will be open to the public, allowing fans to pay their respects to Richards, and will also be attended by Supercars stars such as Rick Kelly, Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander. It will be the second memorial held at the circuit following a similar service for Aussie touring car legend Peter Brock in 2006.

“The theme of the day will be very similar for the Peter Brock Memorial,” Sandown manager Wade Calderwood told Speedcafe.com.

“We see it as more of a celebration. We want to celebrate the way he lived his life, and this is a way for us to pay tribute to that.

“Given that there has been a lot of outpouring of emotion on various websites, I’m expecting a good crowd to commemorate with us on Monday.”
