Former F1 racer Fittipaldi joins Superstars Series for 2012

Former grand prix driver and CART race winner Christian Fittipaldi will run selected Superstars Series events this season ahead of a full-time switch to the tin-top championship in 2013.

The 41-year-old Brazilian started 40 grand prix over three years between 1992 and '94 before switching to the U.S-based CART series. He was a regular podium finisher – notably scooping two race wins and a runner-up finish at the Indy 500 - but suffered a number of injury setbacks in the States.

He subsequently attempted to carve out a career in NASCAR and has since competed in A1GP, ALMS, Grand-Am and his native Stock Car Brasil championship.

In 2012 Fittipaldi will compete in Superstars on a part-time basis, including the first three races, with an as yet unconfirmed team. He then plans to launch a full-season assault next year.

“I'm really happy and proud to be part of the Superstars family starting from the upcoming 2012 season," said Fittipaldi.

"The championship is experiencing really fast growth, gathering some of the world's top drivers. I can't wait to take part in the first three races."

His Superstars switch will see Fittipaldi compete against three-time series champion Gianni Morbidelli, his F1 team-mate at the Footwork Arrows squad for the 1994 season.
