Costa makes Eurocup Megane Trophy switch for 2012

Highly rated Spanish racer Albert Costa has turned his back on single-seater competition in favour of a switch to the Eurocup Megane Trophy.

The 21-year-old took the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup title in 2009 before stepping up to Formula Renault 3.5 and finishing fifth in his rookie year. He improved to fourth in 2011, scoring his maiden series win at his home circuit in Barcelona.

However despite being keen to remain on the single-seater ladder Costa has elected to switch to tin-tops after the loss of a sponsor left him short of budget. The Catalan will join reigning champions Oregon for an assault on the Megane championship.

"I take a step backwards in my career in order to take two forward," Costa admitted of the deal.

"The Megane Trophy is a very competitive championship I am very excited about this new project and, as always, will fight to win," he added.

Costa will be looking to follow in the footsteps of 2011 champion Stefano Comini. The Swiss also switched from single-seaters to race in the series, resulting in a dominant title win for Oregon.
