Daniel Ricciardo and Sten Pentus shared the Formula Renault 3.5 Series wins at the Hungaroring, but Mikhail Aleshin extended his championship lead.
A pair of podium finishes from the Russian driver saw him stretch his advantage over Ricciardo after the Australian could only follow his dominant race 1 win with sixth in race 2.
Ricciardo started the opening event on pole position and, after holding off the fellow front row man Aleshin at the first corner, he was rarely threatened again barring another brief challenge from the Carlin driver after a restart following an early Safety Car period.
He took the chequered flag 13.758 seconds clear of Aleshin, who was similarly comfortable in second, almost 16 seconds ahead of the battle for third.
The final podium spot went to Fortec Motorsport’s Pentus, who defended the place throughout the race from Brendon Hartley of Tech 1 Racing.
Junior Lotus Racing’s Nelson Panciatici was fifth, a position he held for most of the race and defended in the closing stages from a charging Albert Costa, who was the biggest mover in the field, climbing from 16th at the start to net sixth for Epsilon Euskadi.
In race 2, Pentus scored his second win of the season, leading from pole position and heading much of the race except for a brief stint during the mandatory pit stops.
With Pentus comfortably clear of the impressive Costa, who notched his best result of the year in second, the race was red flagged just short of the finish when Hartley’s car ground to a halt in a dangerous position.
Aleshin held off a strong challenge from Pons Racing’s Daniel Zampieri to complete the podium, while Greg Mansell was fifth for Comtec Racing ahead of race 1 winner Ricciardo.
