FBMW: Hansen & Frijns score Hockenheim wins

Timmy Hansen (Mucke Motorsport) and Robin Frijns (Josef Kaufmann Racing) shared the Formula BMW Europe wins at Hockenheim, but a pair of podium finishes kept Jack Harvey (Fortec Motorsport) in the points lead.

Hansen’s first ever FBMW victory came in damp but drying conditions in Saturday’s race as he survived pressure from Frijns to win.

Frijns started from pole and pulled into the lead as Harvey struggled to get away from the wetter side of the grid and dropped behind Hansen into third place.

A mistake on lap 3 saw Frijns lose his lead and Hansen slip ahead. Over the following laps the two ran nose-to-tail before banging wheels on lap 10, pitching the Dutchman into a quick spin.

That allowed Hansen to pull clear to a five-second victory, while Frijns recovered to hold off Harvey to take second ahead of the Englishman.

Come Ledogar (Eifelland Racing) and Daniil Kvyat (Eurointernational) completed the top five, while Carlos Sainz (Eurointernational) lost ground in the championship fight as he spun mid way through the race after contact with Facu Regalia (Eifelland Racing) and could only recover to 13th.

Frijns made amends for his race 1 error with victory in the second event ahead of Harvey and rookie Hannes van Asseldonk (Josef Kaufmann Racing) who clinched his first ever podium finish.

Frijns made a perfect start from pole position and was able to pull away in the early stages as Harvey fought to find a way past the second-place Kvyat. By the time he had managed to get by, Frijns was long gone and the Fortec driver settled for second.

Van Asseldonk’s podium was secured on the very last lap as he dived past Kvyat. Ledogar was fifth.
