F.BMW: BARC set to save Formula BMW

The British Automobile Racing Club is planning a rescue bid for Formula BMW Europe, after the series was axed by the German car manufacturer.

The championship is now in its third and final year, with the last race due to be on 12th September at Monza. The series is due to fold at the end of this season in favour of a new Formula BMW Talent Cup starting in 2011, although that will not involve a race season.

The 2010 Formula BMW Europe series has involved eight double header meetings, seven of which coincide with grands prix.

British driver Jack Harvey leads the championship on 302 points, 23 ahead of Robin Frijns, with four races remaining.

BARC boss Dennis Carter has already approached the teams regarding taking over the series from next season and explained to Motorsport News that remaining on the grand prix schedule was his primary concern.

“We have spoken to the teams that are there and we have established that there is a desire to keep the championship alive beyond BMW’s involvement, and that is what we are working on now.” he said. “It’s early days, but we want to keep a junior formula on the F1 bill. This would be the BARC’s first overseas championship.”
