CARSINGLE-SEATERFORMULA BMW SERIES

FBMW: Rookies top first FBMW test

Rookie drivers Daniil Kyvat and Carlos Sainz Jr were first and second fastest in Formula BMW Europe testing at Monza this week.

The two day test ended up as a one-day session as snow saw Wednesday’s running cancelled, but despite the bitterly-cold conditions, Kyvat made the most of Tuesday’s dry running to set a best time of 2:00.577, which would not be beaten.

The 15-year-old was delighted to be quickest, but totally realistic about the task ahead of him when he said: “Now I have to keep working like this, as there is a very big difference between the karting I have been doing and driving a Formula BMW car. This is a real car and the best school for going from kartiing to single seaters. I was happy with the way the test went, even though it was pretty cold.”

The drivers all made the most of the track time with Kyvat putting in 47 laps in the morning and 34 in the afternoon. His quickest lap was on his 21st in the afternoon, and prior to that he had set two times that would also have kept him at the top of the time sheets.

Sainz did 40 laps in the morning and 45 in the afternoon, and also did another lap that would have assured him of his position of second on the leader board. In the morning it was 2009 Rookie Cup winner, Robin Frijns who put in the best lap time, with Kyvat the fastest Rookie in fourth.

The drivers will return to action later in the month with their second official test at Barcelona and have further test days scheduled for Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, Zandvoort, Budapest and Hockenheim.
