Fontana eyeing F2 ride

Alex Fontana is eyeing a potential spot on the Formula 2 grid this season following an impressive showing in the pre-Christmas test.

The 19-year-old Swiss racer and reigning International F3 Open champion finished the two-day test in Barcelona seventh and fourth fastest at the wheel of a Williams JPH1B and confirmed that the series is a realistic option for 2012.

“I enjoyed the test and felt confident with the car,” he said. “The driving style really suits me and I like the power and the way it handles. Obviously it took time to get used to it compared to what I've driven before but overall I'm pleased and F2 certainly remains one of my options for next year depending on sponsorship and raising the budget.”

Fontana won twice and scored a further seven podiums en route to the F3 Open crown last season, while a one-off GP3 appearance yielded a sixth place finish in race two at Spa.
