Jon Lancaster wins from Niall Breen in race 2 at the Nurburgring; Nico Hulkenberg cuts gap to series leader.
ART Grand Prix's Jon Lancaster scored his maiden win in race 2 of the Formula 3 Euro Series at the Nurburgring on Sunday.
Lancaster, who took the lead from Niall Breen at the start, led throughout and while the Irishman was a constant threat, in the end he couldn't find a way past, eventually finishing just 0.723 seconds adrift.
"Fantastic! Having scored my maiden win in the Formula 3 Euro Series is a great feeling," said Lancaster. "I have been fast here around here all weekend, but I have been working hard for this success together with my team during the past few weeks."
Breen meanwhile had mixed feelings and while second is his best result ever result in the Euro Series, he was disappointed not to be able to take the victory.
"I am happy with second place, although I would have liked to win this one," he admitted. "On the first few laps, I tried to attack, but overtaking is very difficult here. I had a gap over the guys behind me, so I just drove safely to ensure I came home in second."
Jules Bianchi was next up and took the final spot on the podium, just in front of ART Grand Prix team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg.
"That was a good race," noted Bianchi. "I was already third in the first corner and I managed to defend this position throughout the race. I came here to score some points and I did."
Hulkenberg, who started from eighth on the grid after having won race 1 on Saturday, gradually made his way up through the field.
On lap 19 he overtook Stefano Coletti and six laps later he dealt with Frenchman Tom Dillmann. He was unable to find a way past Bianchi though, and had to settle for fourth. That result though now moves the Williams F1 tester to within a point of current leader Edoardo Mortara, who failed to score this weekend in Eifel.
Further down the order Dillmann was fifth, while Yann Clairay was sixth and took the final point, followed by Jean-Karl Vernay and Daniel Campos-Hull in seventh and eighth. Franck Mailleux and Jens Klingmann rounded out the top ten.
In total 25 runners were classified at the finish, the retirees including Mika Maki, who hit Daniel Ricciardo at the start, as well as Stefano Coletti, Dani Close, Christian Vietoris and Renger van der Zande.
The F3 Euro Series now continues at the end of next month, when proceedings resume at Brands Hatch in the UK, for rounds 13 and 14.
