Mehri sets blistering Macau pace before heavy crash

F3 Euro Series champion Roberto Mehri topped qualifying at a wet Macau today by a commanding 1.6 seconds - only to crash his Prema car moments later.

The Spaniard was on fine form at the Guia street circuit, lapping well clear of second fastest man Marco Wittmann (Signature).

But shortly after posting his best time the 20-year-old made heavy contact with Felix Rosenqvist's Mucke machine at Lisboa, ending both men's sessions.

Mehri had nevertheless done enough to secure top spot ahead of Wittmann with British champion Felipe Nasr third quickest, ahead of Alexander Sims (TOM'S) and Daniel Juncadella (Prema).

The surprise of the session came from reigning Japanese champion Yuhi Sekiguchi. The Mucke driver was only confirmed as a participant this week following an injury to Michael Ho, but set the sixth best time in today's session.

Elsewhere British series front-runner William Buller was ninth in his Fortec-prepared machine, one place ahead of Zandvoort Masters winner Rosenqvist. German champ and GP3 race-winner Richie Stanaway was P13 whilst F3 returnee and former British champion Marko Asmer was 17th.
