Brit F3: Hitech switches to Volkswagen power
The Dallaras of British F3 front runners Hitech Racing will be powered by Volkswagen in 2010.
The 2007 champions, which ran Walter Grubmuller and Renger van der Zande to second and third places in the standings this season, has agreed a deal with Volkswagen that will see them join Carlin Motorsport in using VW power. Carlin’s Daniel Ricciardo ended Mercedes’ recent dominance of the series this season, comfortably winning the title by 87 points.
The deal ends Hitech’s four-year relationship with Mercedes and the team will use the Volkswagen engines in the Macau GP later this month.
“We’ve had a good relationship with Mercedes and their performance has been first class,” said Hitech team manager Ryan Sharp, “but we’ve seen the ambition and drive that VW is putting into F3 and it matches ours.
“We’re going to do everything we can to take the fight to Carlin next season and beyond.”
Hitech also announced that it plans to run three cars in British F3 next season and is hoping to sign 2008 Formula Ford UK champion Walter Boyd, who will represent the team alongside Carlo van Dam in Macau. Hitech could also use its recently-announced SudAm F3 feeder squad, Hitech Brazil, to give a South American driver a chance in the UK series.
