WRC : Latvala on top at the end of day one

Jari-Matti Latvala is 9.1s ahead of Petter Solberg at the end of day one of Rally Finland.

The 11 stages on Friday lived up to the reputation the great event has established over its long and glorious history. Early leader Mikko Hirvonen rolled up his Focus RS WRC on SS4 and while he and co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen escaped injury, their weekend was over on the spot. Later, Henning Solberg crashed while running amongst the leaders.

Latvala will be the first on the road for the second and final day of Rally Finland and will have to keep not only one eye peered on Petter Solberg but also the two Sebs. Ogier is third at 21.8s and Loeb is 32.0s adrift of the leader.

Dani Sordo is a comfortable fifth place ahead of Matthew Wilson and the amazing Juha Kankkunen in seventh. Kimi Raikkonen is eighth, ahead of S-WRC class leader Juho Hanninen, who in turn is in a fine battle with Rantanen for the top spot among the S2000 cars.

Despite an impressive runner-up result on the Monte-Carlo Rally, Mini’s days in the WRC may be numbered.

Championship leader and the only non-Scandinavian winner of Rally Sweden, Sébastien Loeb heads a massive list of entrants for the running of the only snow round on the calendar.

Sébastien Loeb never turned a wheel wrong over the five days taking Rally Monte-Carlo to score his 68th WRC victory. The eight-time world champion capped off a perfect week with the Power Stage win and a maximum 28 points.

Sébastien Loeb is one stage away from his 6th Rally Monte-Carlo Rally success and the early lead in the 2012 WRC.
