BRC: Revolutionary night race announced

The British Rallycross Championship will include a first-ever night race as well as a trip to Belgium and a return to Knockhill in 2010.

Organisers announced next season’s calendar on Tuesday with eight rounds scheduled and the night event set to take place at Blyton in Lincolnshire on 12 June. Racing is set to start on Saturday afternoon and continue into the evening, making the most of the UK’s summer daylight.

“I’ve wanted to try a night race for a year or two and competitors in the championship are eager to try something new,” said British Rallycross Championship promoter Amy Doran.

“The night race is something dramatic and new for the championship and I have exciting plans to make the event into a great experience for fans and racers.

“There are going to be some changes and improvements to the track at Blyton and we will provide all the facilities necessary for a British championship event.”

The trip to Belgium will take place a the ‘Devil’s Hill Circuit’ in Maasmechelen, which ran the first ever rallycross night race in 1990. The BRC’s visit to the track coincides with the Belgian circuit’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

The calendar also includes two visits to Lydden Hill on the circuit’s long established rallycross race dates, Easter Monday and August Bank Holiday Monday. Mallory Park, which hosted rallycross for the first time in 30 years this season, also remains on the schedule with two rounds, while the season will end with a visit to Pembrey in October.
