Procter wins Blyton night race

Despite missing the opening round at Lydden Hill last month, Kevin Procter showed no rustiness in the Blyton Park Night Race at the weekend as he charged to victory in the Supercar A Final at round 2 of the MSA British Rallycross Championship.

Procter, driving his Ford Puma, qualified third for the final Supercar race behind the Ford Fiestas of Julian Godfrey and David Binks but, in wet conditions at the Lincolnshire circuit, he made a clever tyre choice and quickly jumped into the lead.

The dramatic final saw Steve Hill (Mitsubishi Lancer) retire on the opening lap and Godfrey join him one tour later with suspension damage and a puncture. Reigning champion Pat Doran (Ford Focus) had climbed from seventh to third in the opening laps but then caused the race to be red flagged when he hit a course marker, tore a front wheel from his car and scattered debris across the track.

The result was therefore declared after just three laps, giving Procter the win ahead of Binks. Despite his race-ending shunt, Doran was still classified third ahead of Steve Mundy (Ford Focus) and Colin Anson (Ford Ka).

Round 1 winner Andy Scott failed to add to his points tally after his Peugeot developed an engine management issue and retired early in the event, while Andy Grant, second overall heading to Blyton, also retired after the crankshaft oil seal failed on his Ford Focus.

In the Supernational A Final, James Bird (Renault Clio) took victory from pole position ahead of Mike Howlin (Ford Fiesta) and Patrick Ryan (Vauxhall Nova), while class winners in the other races included Tommy Keet (RX150), Darren Scott (Swift Sport), Aidan Hills (Junior Rallycross), Michael Duke (Hot Hatch) and Kris Hudson (BMW Mini).
