Rick May considering rallycross switch

Former Dunlop Motorsport News Saloon Car class champion Rick May is considering a permanent switch to rallycross in the future after buying British Rallycross Championship star Andy Grant’s Ford Escort Cosworth Supercar.

May, won has raced a Sierra Cosworth in the Saloon Car series for the past three seasons, has purchased the car from Grant, who was runner up in the BRC in 2010, to compete in both circuit and rallycross events.

However, May conceded that a full-time switch to rallycross could be on the cards in 2012 should he enjoy the discipline.

“We’ve stripped the car to a bare shell and are going to rebuild it completely before we go racing,” May told Motorsport News. “(Rallycross racer) Julian Godfrey builds the engine and he’s persuaded me to have a go at rallycross.

“I’ll do a few circuit events to learn the car and then have a go at the rallycross event at Lydden in August. If I like rallycross I’ll stick with it and try to do a full season in 2012, and I’m trying to find some more sponsors to help me do that.”
