Walker score Junior-Senior one-two at Donington

The father-son duo of Richard and James Walker were the standout performers in the Volkswagen Racing Cup’s visit to Donington, the younger man leading a one-two finish in the second of the weekend’s two races.

Aaron Mason triumphed in the rain-affected opening run thanks to a lightning start from fourth on the grid that saw him lead as the cars hit turn one.

The AWM Motor Sport man was then able to control the race from the head of the field, never coming under any serious pressure from his pursuers.

The younger Walker took second despite a disastrous first lap during which he dropped to the middle of pack. The Golf driver was impressive as he cut his way back through the field to end the race 1.6 seconds shy of Mason. Father Richard completed the podium, just 0.7s in arrears of his offspring,

Behind them polesitter Joe Fulbrook was fourth in his Bora whilst points leader Steve Chaplin could only manage P5.

Race two was to be an all-Walker affair at the front. Poleman Steve Wood made a good start but soon came under intense pressure from Walker Snr and Jnr, who eventually made their way past to lock out the top two.

Richard now led James, but after a period of pressure the younger man launched an attack and made the move stick. Richard subsequently made a slight mistake that would ensure his son a comfortable advantage that he would hold to the flag.

Behind them race one winner Mason ended a strong weekend with third place, comfortably beating Chaplin and Fulbrook respectively. Meanwhile Poleman Wood could only cross the line seventh after struggling to repeat his qualifying pace.

The Donington weekend leaves Walker Jnr in with a realistic shot at the title heading to next month’s season finale at Silverstone, the Golf driver now just 32 points behind reigning champion Chaplin. Mason and Fulbrook also retain outside chances at snatching the championship, which will be decide over the weekend of October 8/9.
