Chaplin secures VW title at Silverstone

Steve Chaplin secured his second successive Volkswagen Racing Cup title with a measured drive to seventh place in the first of the weekend's two races at Silverstone before celebrating in style with victory in the second.

The 2010 champ entered the season finale looking nailed on to retain his crown and delivered it with a calm run to seventh place in race one. Aaron Mason took the win is his Golf GTI, heading off former champ Joe Fulbrook and the pursuing Paul Taylor.

With the title in the bag Chaplin drove without restraint in race two, taking the win from Mason by a little over six seconds. Only twice this season has a race been won by a great margin.

Behind Mason came James Walker, with Thomas Wilson and Peter Taylor completing the top five. Chaplin’s Beetle was the only non-Golf in the top-eight, making the champion’s victory all the more impressive.

Chaplin ends the campaign 38 points clear of Walker with Mason sealing third after a strong weekend at Silverstone. 2008 and 2009 champion Fulbrook was fifth, 68 in a arrears of Chaplin, before a sizeable 168 gap to joint fifth place finishes Wilson and Steve Wood.
