Hillclimb: Groves takes Val des Terres record

Martin Groves set a new Val des Terres record on Saturday to help maintain his British Hillclimb Championship lead.

The three-time champion’s morning run of 27.61 seconds was enough to comfortably beat Roger Moran by 0.380sec up the Guernsey slope with son Scott third in the same Gould.

Trevor Wilis equaled Moran Jnr’s time of 28.22 seconds fresh from taking the Bouley Bay record in Jersey on Thursday, while Paul Ranson was fifth.

His morning success meant Groves was gunning for his 100th British Championship victory in the afternoon. But that feat will have to wait another week after crashing his Gould into the bank and gifting title rival Scott Moran an easy victory courtesy of a 28.02 seconds run.

Father Roger was 0.340sec adrift in second with Wilis, Hanson and Will Hall completing the top five.

Just a single point now separates Groves and Moran at the top of the standings as the championship moves on to Wiscobme Park this weekend (July 25).
