Hillclimb: Moran extends lead as Groves crashes

Scott Moran and Chris Merrick shared the British Hillclimb Championship spoils at Gurston on Sunday while title challenger Martin Groves crashed out.

Moran extended his lead at the top of the standings with victory in heat one by 0.47sec over Merrick who claimed second by just 0.01sec from co-driver Tom New in the same Gould.

One such GR55 not on the hill though was the yellow machine of Groves which crashed out of practice, damaging the floor and gearbox. It remains to be seen whether the three-time champion will make it back out for next week’s round at Shelsley Walsh.

The second heat was even closer than the first with Moran and Merrick setting identical 26.70sec runs to share the spoils.

New was again in the mix just 0.12sec back, ahead of Deryk Young and Trevor Wilis who moved up to second overall in the championship.
