If your idea of proper motorsport is racing classic GT and F1-esque machines up a winding mountain road then you’ll love the British Hillclimb Championship. Taking in picturesque tracks from across the UK, the aim is a simple one; see that hill? Get up it, as fast as you can. Although no Pikes Peak, the list of entries harks back to a golden age of motorsport.
The first knownhillclimbwas held at La Turbie near Nice, in 1897 but it was their Anglo cousins who really took to it. The hillclimbat Shelsley Walsh in Worcestershire for instance is the world's oldest continuously staged motorsport event still held on its original course after first run in 1905.
Hillclimbs in the UK are usually on twisting tarmac sections of single-lane roads, often on private land. The courses are generally challenging and pretty unforgiving - no gravel run-off areas here - so hillclimbdrivers need quick reflexes and good car control.
