Indycar refugee eyes ARCA for 2011

Indycar racer Milka Duno is considering a full-time switch to the ARCA Series in 2011 as her chances of remaining in the single-seater formula continue to fade.

38-year-old Duno has run sporadically in Indycar since 2007, taking her best finish to date with 11th in that year’s Texas event. 2010 saw her run a full schedule for the first time but she struggled badly on non-oval circuits, incurring the wrath of her competitors and often being parked early in proceedings by race organiseres.

The series has now introduced a 105% qualifying rule - known colloquially as 'The Milka Rule’ - for road and street courses, stating that a driver must post a lap within 105% of the pole-sitter's effort at some point during the weekend. Duno would have failed to qualify for most road and street events had this been in place last year.

Now the Venezuelan - who is heavily backed by her native oil company Citgo - has confirmed that she will contest the opening race of the 2011 season with reigning champions Sheltra Motorsport. She tested with the team at Daytona International Speedway yesterday in preparation for the February 15th event.

“Patrick Sheltra, Jon Wolfe and Brandon Hinson head a very skilled and dedicated organization and having met with them and visited their facility it is easy to see why they are the 2010 champions,” said Duno.

“We focused today on drafting and we ended up with pretty good results,” she said of the test. “This was just the third day working with the team we’re working together very well. They are a great group of people and they know what they’re doing – it is a fantastic opportunity for me.”

“We are really excited to have the opportunity to work with Milka in Daytona and to give her a shot at being the first female to win a major event in stock car racing,” Said Sheltra. “Our goal is to get her comfortable at the test, and I have no doubt she will have a great performance in the race.”

Sheltra added that his team was working towards a multi-car assault on the series for 2011 but that no further details could currently be confirmed.
