Prost and Dayrut take Andros Trophy wins in Andorra

Jean-Philippe Dayrut and Alain Prost shared the Andros Trophy spoils in Andorra, ensuring they left the principality separated by just one point atop the championship standings.

Dayrut steered his Mini Countryman to the opening event victory, beating Prost and former grand prix racer Franck Lagorce (Skoda Fabia) to the win.

But double Andros champion Prost was imperious in race two, winning comfortably from Jean-Baptiste Dubourg (Renault Clio) and erstwhile points leader Olivier Panis (Skoda Fabia). Dayrut could only manage a distant seventh

“I think victory was possible in the first race, but we decided to spare our tyres,” four-time F1 Prost champion remarked afterwards.

”In terms of championship points, we preferred to finish each race in second place rather than win the first race but risk finishing way down the order in the second race,” he continued.

“Finishing second and first won’t happen often this year. After last week’s trip to Val Thorens, where we finished just shy of the win, we have already made up ground. The fight is on!”

Prost’s son Nicolas came home ninth in the second run, his best finish since stepping up from the Andros Electric category. The 30-year-old called the result ‘a big confidence booster for the rest of the season.’

The Andorran event sees Dayrut move to the top of the standings with a one-point advantage over Prost. Panis, who topped the championship following round one, slips to third but remains just four points shy of top spot. The next event takes place this weekend (December 16/17) at Alpe d’Huez.
