750 MC: Easter weekend round-up

Series falling under the 750 Motor Club banner visited two separate venues over the Easter weekend, Mallory Park and Castle Combe.

Castle Combe entertained entrants in the MR2 and Locost Championships while Mallory hosted races in the RGB, Kit Cars, Formula Vee, Bike Sports, 750 Formula and 750 Trophy series.

MR2 Championship

At Castle Combe, Zac Chapman made it four wins from four races, marking himself out as the favourite to become Mark Jessop’s successor as champion ahead of Russian driver Andrei Bgatov in the two races, while Steve Lumley completed the podium in both events.

Locost

Lee Bankhurst started his first ever sprint race from pole position in the Locost championship, having only ever previously driven in the Fun Cup (UK), and went on to win the opening race from David Black and Alex von Ehrheim. Bankhurst’s hopes for a double debut win were ended in race 2 were ended when hit the barriers after making contact with a rival while fighting for the lead. At the restart Scott Mittell got in front and led home Black and Martin Gambling at the chequered flag.

Formula Vee

Martin Farmer edged a close battle with Ben Anderson to win the Formula Vee race at Mallory Park, and was just 0.65 seconds clear of the Autosport journalist when red flags brought the action to a halt with a handful of laps to go. Peter Belsey was also involved in the three-way fight for victory prior to a spin which handed the final podium spot to Paul Taylor, meaning another 1-2-3 for the GAC chassis.

750 Trophy

Roger Windley (Time 3B) won an exciting scrap with Graham Weetman (DNC) to win the opening 750 Trophy race of the weekend and comfortably followed that up in race 2 after Weetman fell victim to a first lap accident. Ron Welsh (Fairthorpe FJ) was third in race 1, while Don Rawson (Rawson-Climax) and Paul Girolini (JB) filled out the race 2 podium.

Kit Cars

Andy Hiley’s hopes of victory in the Kit Cars race were ended when he was forced to pit with oil pressure dramas meaning John Moore, who blasted through the field in his Sylva Phoenix, took the win. Nigel Brown’s Sylva Phoenix was second while Rob Johnston completed the podium in his Cyana MX500R.

RGB

Paul Rogers made his racing comeback after donating a kidney to his brother eight weeks ago, by winning the RBG race in his Contour RGB09b. After starting on pole position, he dropped behind Doug Carter’s Genesis, but regained the position soon after and led Carter, who finished second, by almost 20 seconds at the chequered flag. John Cutmore was third in his Spire GTR.

Bike Sports

Darren Luke won both Bike Sports races in his Radical PR6. Nigel Place and James Breakwell were the other podium finishers in their Radicals in race 1, while Richard Stables and James Abbott were second and third in race 2. Place’s hopes of adding a win in the second event to his second place from the first were ended when he slid wide while at Gerards while leading.

750 Formula

Roger Rowe and his Centaur Mk20MC was again the class of the field in the 750 Formula, adding victory to his race win in the opening round at Snetterton last month. Bill Rutter kept Rowe honest on his way to second place in his Darvi Mk5, while the Davis T7 of Nathaniel Cooper was third.
