Rast makes it four in a row with German triumph

Lechner Racing’s Rene Rast’s quest for a second Porsche Supercup title continued to gather pace at the Nürburgring as the Lechner Racing driver scored a fourth successive win to go 15 points clear at the top of the standings.

Rain had hit the circuit early in the day, but by the start the track was drying and the majority of the field opted for slick tyres. Youngster Kuba Giermaziak (VERVA) had taken a brilliant pole position in Saturday’s qualifying, but the race’s early star was Sebastiaan Bleekemolen (Team Bleekemolen), who had elected to run wet weather rubber and thus charged to the front early on.

But Bleekemolen’s hopes rested on more rain, and when it didn’t come his race was sunk. That left Giermaziak battling Rast for the lead but, perhaps applying some caution to the situation, the 21-year-old did not fight the reigning champion too hard. Rast was thus able to come home for his fourth win in a row, with Giermaziak a career best second.

Sean Edwards was third, beating was Norbert Siedler (Lechner Racing) to the final podium spot. The Austrian was followed by Stefan Rosina (VERVA), who scored his best Supercup result to date, ahead of Jeroen Bleekemolen (Team Abu Dhabi),

Rast’s nearest challenger is now Edwards, 15 points in arrears, with Siedler and long-time challenger Nick Tandy falling away from the German. Three rounds remain on the calendar, the next coming at Hungary in five days time.
