PSC: Verdonck & Lester to make Supercup debuts

Youngsters Nico Verdonck and Jono Lester will make their Porsche Supercup debuts at Spa-Francorchamps and Monza respectively.

Both drivers have been invited to race the series’ VIP car by Porsche Motorsport with reigning Formula Le Mans champion Verdonck to race in front his home crowd at Spa and New Zealander Lester to make his bow at Monza.

Verdonck, a former single-seater racer, has only raced sporadically in 2010 since winning the inaugural FLM crown last year, including an FIA GT1 World Championship outing in a Triple H Team Hegersport Maserati.

The 20-year-old Lester, who has raced extensively in Porsches in New Zealand, also hasn’t raced since last year and is looking forward to his return.

“I haven’t taken the starter’s lights for a motor race in close to 18 months,” Lester said. “The invitation from Porsche Motorsport came at the right time. Without it, there was a good chance we would do as so many young drivers are forced to do, and ‘throw in the towel’.

“Monza will mean many things to me, but really it’s just a tremendous opportunity that I know I am privileged to receive. Winning the Porsche Motorsport Talent Scholarship in February has definitely helped my credibility, and this is my reward.”
