PSC: Lauda to make Supercup debut at Hockenheim

Mathias Lauda will make his Porsche Supercup debut at Hockenheim this weekend.

The 29-year-old former DTM racer, son of three-time Formula One World Champion Niki, has been invited to drive the Porsche VIP car at the German Grand Prix-supporting event.

“I’m looking forward to this race,” Lauda said. “As a rookie in the Supercup it’s a very interesting challenge to race against all the regulars.”

Meanwhile, former Supercup race winner Nicolas Armindo returns to the grid in place of reigning champion Jeroen Bleekemolen at Al Faisal Lechner Racing.

Bleekemolen is again absent due to his American Le Mans Series commitments, leaving team boss Walter Lechner to swoop for the 28-year-old Frenchman.

Armindo won races in 2007 and 2008 and has since driven in the ADAC GT Masters and FIA GT3 European Championship as well as the German Carrera Cup, where he currently leads the standings.

“I remember the 2008 round in Monza with pleasure and from time to time I grab the DVD and watch the race again,” said Armindo on his last Supercup win. “I can’t believe that it’s me who, after a hunt through the field, finally won the race.

“I doubt I’ll be able to repeat such a great race again in Hockenheim. The competition in the Supercup is really tough this season and I have got different tasks when I’m driving with the Al-Faisal-Lechner Porsche.”

Armindo’s team-mate at Hockenheim, Rene Rast, currently leads the Porsche Supercup standings, and Armindo is happy to play number two to the young German.

“Of course another thing is to keep René’s back free and support him as much as possible in order for him to extend his lead in the driver standings of the Championship.”
